AnnoMarket, Three Months In
The AnnoMarket project is now in full swing and starting to see results. Work has started on the first prototype, and early deliverables have been produced. A month 3 deliverable by Ontotext surveys Cloud development and application marketplaces, and constitutes valuable preparation for this central aspect of the project. Text analysis computation is well suited to cloud infrastructures, since it is very often bursty and requires elastic infrastructure to accommodate it. Using a Software-as-a-Service distribution model, on top of cloud infrastructure, replaces significant hardware and admin staff expenditure with a pay-per-use model, central to the AnnoMarket vision.
Cloud Computing has emerged in the last three years as a viable alternative to the local data center
approach employed by enterprises for several decades and as an alternative to the traditional way of
using software services. Nonetheless, the deliverable finds, there are certain challenges, open issues and complexities regarding a successful transition of the enterprise hardware and software infrastructure stack to a Cloud Computing model. For example, the deliverable highlights interoperability as an important element in avoiding vendor lock-in. Other issues include consistency in performance and reliability. Additionally, there are various Cloud offerings from different providers, and the choice of the provider and cloud service portfolio is usually nontrivial.
The deliverable is key in providing an overview of the benefits and challenges of the Cloud Computing model for service delivery and how it impacts the AnnoMarket goals, a detailed analysis of the cloud service offerings of the three main Cloud providers, Amazon, Google and Microsoft, and a set of concrete recommendations and best practices regarding the AnnoMarket platform.
